By The Hand Club For Kids (By The Hand) is a faith-based after-school program that emphasizes academic excellence while nurturing the whole child — mind, body and soul. Founded in 2001 with an initial group of 16 children in Cabrini Green, By The Hand now serves well over 1,500 first- through twelfth-grade students in four of Chicago’s most under-resourced neighborhoods.

During the crucial after-school hours — when most crimes against kids are committed — By The Hand provides a safe environment; mentors and tutors children; provides for their physical well-being with nutritious meals and healthcare, including dental check-ups and cleanings and eye exams; and invites them into the good news of the Gospel. The results of By The Hand’s efforts speak for themselves: 100 percent of By The Hand’s 2018 seniors graduated high school, with 89 percent matriculating to college. That year, 83 percent of all By The Hand students professed personal faith in Christ.

Featured Serve Opportunity:
SERVE CHICAGO’S YOUTH WITH BY THE HAND CLUB FOR KIDS

Thursday, February 27 | 2:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Join a group of Christ Church volunteers for an afternoon with By the Hand’s after-school program. In Chicago’s Austin neighborhood — just 20 minutes from Christ Church Oak Brook — By The Hand partners with Moving Everest Charter School to provide students with holistic after-school services, including tutoring, social activities and spiritual guidance. We’ll be providing homework help, working with students on a computer reading program, serving a meal and joining kids at the table for fellowship. There may also be an enrichment activity such as dance, cooking or crafts. The goal of the day: create an environment where kids are known, loved and equipped to thrive.

This is a Group Serve opportunity and transportation is provided. Meet us in the Commons at Christ Church Oak Brook at 2:00 p.m. for orientation and prayer before we travel to Moving Everest Charter School. We plan to return to Christ Church Oak Brook by 7:30 p.m. Please note that for the safety of the students, all volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application process, including a Background Check.
